Fri March 28
Friday night witnessed the
ridiculously long line outside the Swiss Institute on Broadway in SoHo
for the experimental and “subversive” Dark Art Fair. Providing a kind
of art fair alternative, the concept was to hold a fair without the use
of natural or electric light, thus engendering a unique experience
within which to experience art.

Thursday proved to be an action-packed art-fair-event-hopping bonanza.
I started at Scope, located in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park at 62nd
Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The tent’s interior was arid and warm, and
the quaint selection of 50 galleries was obviously much more digestible
than the vast ocean of booths at the Armory.

Wednesday provided “VIP’s” and the press the opportunity to preview
this year’s iteration of the legendary Armory Show. Peppering the
throngs of New York’s glitterati and European jetsetters were the less
couture-clad members of the press and some actual artists themselves.

Broadway Gallery Alumna, Katerina Kampiti has just been included in a new book on photography that was published by Mellisa publications and includes Kampiti’s work. It is a very important book on the history of photography in Greece, which is going to be published in an English edition very soon.
Additionally, she just had a solo show in Greece that was very successful. It took place at "Naias" Gallery in Naoussa from February 27 to March 10. The space was an old renovated building of stones and wood in the center of the city near a river with a fantastic view. It took place during the carnival time in Greece, linking the "Boules and Yannitsaroi" festival with her work. The space was very beautiful and many people attended the exhibition. She showed a trilogy of three works (40 framed pictures and an installation):
1. Winter Solstice
2. Astoria Nocturnes
3. KAMPITI Street
It was very well received by the audience and the press and she also sold 14 pieces.

According to a source close to the fair organisers, the Geneva dealer Pierre Huber may be forced to resign as artistic director of ShContemporary, which launched in Shanghai in September with 120 dealers. Mr Huber is involved in a legal dispute with the Parisian dealer Enrico Navarra (The Art Newspaper, November 2007, p69), who has accused Mr Huber of numerous conflicts of interest. Mr Navarra cites the ShContemporary catalogue cover which features a work of art from Mr Huber's own gallery. He also says Mr Huber accompanied VIPs to artists' studios in Shanghai and then suggested purchases should be made through him. Mr Huber's lawyer says Mr Navarra "owes Mr Huber money", which accounts for the allegations.

Lu Jie: The Long March is a difficult thing. One problem is my lack of sufficient theoretical and curatorial preparation. A bigger problem is that envisioning and planning are nothing more than envisioning and planning. Later, when we hit the road, it was "the road that led us along", Note 1 and the whole feel of the project was changed utterly. In many cases, when we actually went to realize an artist's proposal, the artist's feeling and intention was different from the effect finally produced. Other changes were made on account of the people we encountered, or the spaces we used, all of which stand in interactive relation to the project itself. In this process change is a constant. Perhaps when we were actually there we felt that there were tremendous obstacles. Or rather, we felt like things we did were failing? But we were very open, taking failure as experience, as a way to accumulate material. But when we got to the eleventh site, I sprouted some new ideas and decided that things as they stood were not good enough, that we must stop. Later, when we got to the twelfth site, we were continuously debating this question with our artists and our curatorial team. In the end, we decided to stop, to declare the project "an uncompleted completion."
