Unseen For Over A Century, Renoir Mini Goes On Display

    A
small version of Renoir’s La Loge ("The Theater Box"), one of the most
celebrated Impressionist images, is being shown to the public for the
first time since 1875, the year after it was painted, the London Times
reports. Courtauld Institute Galleries in London is exhibiting it
through February 21 alongside the full version, which depicts the
artist’s brother, Edmond, and a model, Nini, at the Paris Opera. It is
expected to sell for more than its estimated value of $6.95 million at
    Sotheby’s on February 5. (Artinfo, January 30, 2008)

Danish Library To Acquire Controversial Cartoons

    Denmark’s
national library wants to house the cartoon images of the prophet
Muhammad that sent shock waves and sparked protests throughout the
Islamic world two years ago after they were published in Western
newspapers, the Guardian reports. The library in Copenhagen has said it
is trying to acquire the drawings for "preservation purposes" and is in
negotiations with the 12 artists who drew them. The library also said
the decision was not meant to be controversial, and it was not planning
to display the works publicly. "We are not interested in an exhibition,
we are interested in them being kept safe for future generations
because they have created history in Denmark," Jytte Kjaergaard, a
spokeswoman for the library, told the Guardian. "This is the obvious
place to keep them because we have all the security measures in
    place."  (Artinfo, January 30, 2008)
