I am a self taught artist from India, brought
up and educated mostly in New Delhi. As the wife of an Indian diplomat,
I have traveled extensively for the last 25 years and am currently
living in Moscow, our seventh posting in a foreign country. I paint in
two mediums: watercolors and acrylics on canvas. In my acrylics I make
use of bolder colors by using broad brushstrokes and mostly figurative
work. I usually paint people: working men and women of the fields,
musicians, dancers, boatmen. In this manner, I celebrate everyday life
and occupations. I also paint pictures with animals and scenes of urban
situations, such as crowded cities and hectic streets. Most of my
imagery is India-centric, mainly images of the teeming humanity taken
for granted in India. I have also recently painted scenes of churches
and local markets in Moscow. I try to depict alternate realities,
enhancing the ordinary with my particular version of life in its
infinite variety. Like all paintings, my works are inner
interpretations of outer realities.
